Scenes from Saturday + Tours & More

Did I think these Saturday posts would one day include a recap of college tours? Absolutely not. Is that what happened yesterday? Absolutely. We’ve spent the past few days of spring break touring schools, scrutinizing dining hall buffets, and telling Ce we never had it this good when we were freshman.

It remains to be seen where this all eventually ends up, but right now I’m just trying to enjoy the trip, not let my own emotions, and pay attention to the small, fleeting moments. Those 18 summers are almost over.

I’m also doing a pretty job of ignoring the ‘cost of attending’ slide in every presentation. It’s strange, I tend to black out every time that one flashes onscreen.

I’ll spare you the picture of the complimentary breakfast buffet, but let me tell we skipped the grits but definitely made full use the waffle iron.

We also didn’t skip the workout. Here’s Michelle being really annoyed at me, but happy she could log a Peloton bike ride.

Saturday we drove from Raleigh to Elon, which we all quite liked.

Ally quite liked being constantly mistaken for a prospective student and/or Cece’s twin sister.

Also, looking back at our photorolls that night, 90% of the Elon photos had a fountain in it. Their fountain budget must be off the charts.

Here’s an action shot of me continuing to extol the virtues of flashcards, even at the college level.

After the tour, we visited family in the area, then headed into Durham for some dinner.

I was very pleasantly surprised. Actually, the whole family was surprised. Constant readers know, I make a lot of pizza. As a family, we eat a lot of pizza. We know pizza. We have opinions about pizza. Pizzeria Toro in downtown Durham was legit. Really, really good wood fired Neapolitan pies.

After pizza, we found some equally good ice cream with homemade hot fudge.

Road trip rule: if you find someone place with homemade hot fudge, you gotta order it.

We wrapped up the night by strolling down to the Durham Bulls stadium (currently the Rays AAA team). They were losing to Norfolk but it didn’t seem to be dampening the atmosphere.
