One of the great things about revisiting a place on vacation is that you have the time, knowledge, and flexibility to explore new things and take advantage of unexpected opportunities. This happened to us on our most recent return trip to Prince Edward Island.
We were googling around looking for nearby restaurants and stumbled on Copper Bottom Brewery in Montague which offered, in addition to a nice tap room, live fiddle music on Sunday and pizza and vinyl on Thursday. Yes, please!
What is it?
Copper Bottom Brewery is a local microbrewery and tap room in Montague, PEI, CA. There is an on-site brewery on the street level and a tap room upstairs with indoor and outdoor seating.
Where is it?
On the eastern side of PEI, Copper Bottom Brewery is in King’s County on Main St./Route 4, near the center of the town Montague on a small bluff overlooking the water across from Waterfront Park and the Garden of the Gulf Museum.
There is parking behind the brewery, on the street, or in the parking lot across the street during off hours.
What do they serve?
Beer, of course. I’m not a craft beer expert but they appeared to offer a good range of typical craft beers that vary with the time of year or season. They offer a selection of year round, seasonal, and one-offs on tap that range from IPAs, to sours, to pils.
They had six beers on tap both times we visited. You could get a sampler flight of 4 5 ounce pours or a 13 or 16 ounce single glass.
They also had wine, cider, kombucha, coffee, tea, sodas and water available.
They invited you to bring your own food but also had a small snacking menu available which included chips, cheese plate, oysters, and a few other snack items that may vary depending on the day or event.
You know what sealed our love for this place? They offered a selection of handpies from the Handpie Co.! It’s like they knew we were coming!
What’s the vibe?
Microbrewery crossed with your favorite local pub. The vibe was very welcoming and relaxed and appeared to pull in just as many locals as tourists.
Both inside and outside, on the tree-shaded porch, is clean, open and inviting. There are board games, cards, and lawn games to occupy the kids, plus big or small tables available to accommodate just about any group size.
The traditional music jam on Sunday afternoons had the place overflowing. The oysters were fresh and briny and available with a couple different toppings to try. People were setting up picnics at tables to go along with wine and beer while sharing food with their neighbors. Just a great way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon.
The pizza and vinyl on Thursday night was also a hit with our group. We went early and the DJ was just getting going when we left but the beers and pizza (wood-fired from a visiting food truck) were again top-notch and a great way to spend a pleasant summer evening.
If you are looking for a break from the great local seafood scene or just have a craving for some good beer and pizza while on vacation in PEI, Copper Bottom Brewery is a must-stop. Great beer, great vibe, and a really welcoming community. Give it a try. I bet you’ll be back.
